In just a few months in 2004, Nouvelle Vague advanced the notion of a cover band and began to delight audiences who almost forget the original versions when they hear their sound. Triumphant world tours followed. With several studio albums and extensive global tours under their name, Nouvelle Vague celebrated their 19th anniversary, taking a break of several years due to the world situation.
The group's first two albums, ‘Nouvelle Vague’ (2004) and ‘Bande A Part’ (2006), defined their unique sound with bossa versions of new wave classics. Their third album ‘NV3’ (2009) featured collaborations with Depeche Mode's Martin Gore, Ian McCulloch of Echo & the Bunnymen, Terry Hall from The Specials and Barry Adamson. Subsequent acclaimed albums were released in 2010, 2016 and 2019, and the band has performed to rapt audiences around the world throughout their 19-year career. In 2018, the production of Nouvelle Vague revealed the band was returning to its roots: an acoustic guitar, a few keyboards, a bit of ambience and two singers (Mélanie Pain, Élodie Frégé and / or Phoebe Killdeer). After the recent death of founder Olivier Libaux, the band's line-up has been rearranged once again.
Nouvelle Vague will perform on 22 June at the Belgrade Fortress at 9 p.m.

Nick Murphy, known professionally as Chet Faker, is an Australian singer and songwriter who won Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2012, and his single ‘Thinking in Textures’ won Best Independent Single/EP at the Australian Independent Records Awards. This work won Best Independent Release at the 2013 Rolling Stone Australia Awards. Having dropped the name Chet Faker in September 2016, Murphy began performing and releasing material under his birth name, only to revive the moniker for the release of his new single ‘Low’ four years later in October 2020. With both Nick Murphy and Chet Faker living in tandem, Murphy suggests he is feeling a bit of a ‘ping-pong effect’ for his next release.
‘Now that I’ve done a Chet thing’, he says, ‘I feel like I want to do another NM thing. But there’s a liquidity to it, and that has really allowed me to feel free with what I’m doing. I’m proud of this reputation I’ve got of being kind of inconsistent, in a way.’
While he is uncertain of what the future holds, for now, Murphy is excited to bring Chet Faker back. Above all, he is happy to be, well, happy.
‘To write truly happy music, you’ve got to really get to know your own sadness. And that’s the work that got me here.’ he concludes.
Chet Faker will perform on 26 June at the Belgrade Fortress at 9 p.m.
