FEST 50 Plaques Awarded

In the Ceremonial Hall of the City Assembly, on September 23, organized by the Belgrade Festivals Centre – CEBEF, the awarding of the FEST 50 plaques was organized.
With this symbolic gesture, FEST thanks the individuals who founded and created the most important film event in the country during fifty years.
The International Film Festival – FEST was founded on September 23, 1970, and had its first edition in 1971 under the slogan ‘Brave New World.’ The winners and their descendants were present at the awarding ceremony.

At the beginning of the ceremony, the Deputy Mayor, Goran Vesić, addressed the audience with the words that this was the day when the decision had been made fifty years ago to give Belgrade one of its best festivals. He said that this was an opportunity for all of us to be reminded of the people who had made a significant contribution over the past 50 years to make FEST significant for our society, our city and culture. He praised the gesture of the Secretariat for Culture and emphasized that this was an opportunity to be reminded of the creators who were no longer with us, and who would posthumously receive recognition from the City for what they had done for the Festival. Goran Vesić proudly announced that Belgrade would work on giving a street named after FEST founder Milutin Čolić, and that CEBEF would digitize materials from FEST, in order to preserve memories for future generations. He also pointed out that the obligation of the City was to increase the budget for such events with the desire of reaching those heights from the 70s, when the country had been in a different situation. He believes that FEST is one of our most important cultural events, that should be cherished, as other events will be cherished, and that it is important to remember the creators who contributed to the identity of our city by working for the Festival.

After the award ceremony, on behalf of the winners, Iva Čolić, the granddaughter of Milutin Čolić, the founder of FEST, addressed the audience, saying in an emotional way that Milutin Čolić had only wanted to be a grandfather to his grandchildren, and that he used to say that indifference sometimes hurt more than the pain inflicted.
She believes that the awarding of this plaque showed that there was no indifference, that there is a memory of all those who made FEST write the cultural history of Belgrade, the former and the current state. She thanked on behalf of her family, the film family and the audience that FEST had never forgotten.
Miroljub Vučković, the longest-serving selector of FEST, said with great gratitude that FEST is placed in a different context and makes Belgrade be shown, recognized and respected on the world map, not only as a festival epicenter but also as a cultural event. He also stated that, at his age, he was free to remind that, in addition to the great respect he had for Milutin Čolić as an exceptional, intuitive and educated man with a perfect sense of film and programme composition, we should breathe in the present time, get out of ‘Milutin Čolić's shoe’ and ‘wear e.g. sneakers’ ie. to tailor FEST according to the criteria of today's audience that lived with a new speed, with new possibilities. He stated that he believed that this was an encouragement for new temptations and new open doors.
This is the first in a series of events to mark the jubilee 50th edition of FEST, which will be in 2022.
