The National Chamber Choir Madrigal – Marin Constantin’ is a symbol of Romanian and universal musical life. Since its foundation in 1963, thanks to the work of the legendary musician and conductor Marin Constantin (1925-2011), the choir has given hundreds of concerts all over the world, thus becoming a true brand of Romania. It set the standard in choral chamber music with its unique concept, defined by its specific sound, stereophonic stage setting and imposing costumes. Its repertoire focuses on the European Renaissance, Gregorian and Byzantine chant, traditional carols, as well as classical and contemporary Romanian compositions.

Today, the Romanian National Chamber Choir ‘Madrigal – Marin Constantin’ is a public concert institution of national importance subordinated to the Romanian Ministry of Culture. The honorary director of the ensemble is the internationally renowned conductor Ion Marin, and since 2014 the management of the institution is coordinated by Emil Pantelimon. The principal conductor of the Choir is Anna Ungureanu – disciple and continuer of maestro Marin Constantin, and since 2016 the assistant conductor is Cezar-Mihail Verlan.

In November 2016, the Madrigal Choir was awarded the title of Ambassador of Freedom, Hope and Peace, being granted the ‘Jean Nussbaum and Eleanor Roosevelt’ award at the United Nations Palace in Geneva, during the Global Summit on Religion, Peace and Security.

By September 2022, the choir held three major concerts: ‘Shakespeare – Sound and Word’, as part of the 13th edition of the International Shakespeare Festival in Craiova, ‘Gala Madrigal 59 – 59 YEARS IN 59 MINUTES’ in Bucharest and the Extraordinary Concert ‘Ave Maria’ with two performances in the City of Constanta. The choir also presented the Extraordinary Easter Performance ‘Holy Week’ during the national tour in four Romanian cities. Each of these concerts had its own stage direction, set design and lighting design.

Anna Ungureanu is the principal conductor of the Romanian National Chamber Choir ‘Madrigal – Marin Constantin’. Her conducting vision and choice of programmes carry forward the unique concept of the Choir, defined by its specific repertoire and sonority, stereophonic stage setting and impressive costumes. The professional experience gained after almost nine years spent alongside the founder of the Choir, maestro Marin Constantin, allowed her to become the successor of this legendary musician. In 2022, she received the Marin Constantin Award for ‘Excellence in Music’. Specialized in the art of conducting under the coordination of prominent artists Marin Constantin and Ion Marin, she has conducted numerous concerts around the world (Europe, Israel, Turkey, Russia, Japan and China).

Anna Ungureanu has decades of experience in research and teaching. She has been a member of the jury of many music competitions. Through the Cantus Mundi national programme, she coordinates workshops for choral composers, selects programmes, composes and arranges works for choirs and supervises choral activity within the programme. Her performances have been released on several CDs. She studied at the National University of Music Bucharest, where she received her doctoral degree.
